Modern Day Temperature Measurement Devises And Their Uses

Relevance Three examples of modern day temperature measurement devises and their uses: Scientific Theory ïÆ'Ëœ Explain the science behind how a mercury thermometer works using the particle model. When a mercury thermometer or any type of thermometer comes into contact with a heated or cooled object the kinetic energy of the molecules of the thermometer heats o cools to match the objects temperature. The thermometer normally has a liquid substance such as mercury or alcohol that will expand when heated. The molecules move faster taking up more space causing the liquid in the thermometer to expand and rise to show the liquids substance temperature. Also the molecules bounce against each other harder and harder which is pushing†¦show more content†¦The first thermometer used had the same basics as today using a glass test tube and mercury or coloured alcohol. The draw backs of the thermometer went back to 400 years ago when the inventor Galileo created a thermometer to measure the temperature of water. ïÆ'Ëœ What is the difference between a thermoscope and a thermometer? The difference between thermoscope and a thermometer is that a thermometer measures heat and has a scale that determines the actual temperature where as a thermoscope is an earlier version of a thermometer which doesn’t have a scale which meant that you could only tell that the temperature was decreasing or increasing. Also a thermoscope doesn’t let you know the actual temperature which means in experiments if you use a thermoscope the experiment will not be accurate. ïÆ'Ëœ Explain how the Fahrenheit scale was developed and when. The Fahrenheit scale was invented by a German physicist named Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit who the scale was named after. In 1714 the first modern thermometer as developed which was the mercury thermometer with more advanced measurements than all of the other thermometers created. The original Fahrenheit scale was not entirely accurate because it did not give an accurate calibrate. The Fahrenheit temperature scale ranged from 212 degrees (boiling point of water on this scale) to 32 degrees (boiling point on

Stereotype and Term Crooked Politician Free Essays

Stereotypes are rampant in our culture and have been a dilapidating issue in our civilization for a long while. The use of stereotypes to judge another human being can cause serious detriment to the success and happiness of others. Understanding what stereotypes are and how they came about is important to eradicate the use of stereotypes and be able to assess a person’s worth based on their own individual traits. We will write a custom essay sample on Stereotype and Term Crooked Politician or any similar topic only for you Order Now Some of the most common stereotypes are among politicians, tattooed persons, feminists, and senior citizens. I will uncover the stereotypes associated with these groups, how the stereotypes are used and why, and how stereotyping most definitely leaves a negative effect. Stereotyped Groups There is a vast majority of people that are stereotyped. When a stereotype is implemented, it groups individuals into a certain category (Moore, Parker, 2004). This poses a difficult standard because most people can fit into several categories based on different factors such as religion, race, sex, and personality traits among other features. When someone chooses to group people and give that group a description, they are opting to provoke â€Å"a thought or image about a group of people based on little or no evidence† (Moore, Parker, 2004, p. 130). Political cues and stereotypes are key elements in the political spectrum that undoubtedly propel a certain gage in voter’s decisions (Johnston, 1981). Politicians have always had a general stereotype of being dishonest. The term â€Å"crooked politician† is a common one, and is seemingly used on a regular basis. Although there are mendacious politicians, it is unfair to ascertain that all or most of politicians have this characteristic. If a politician believes in a different ideal than a citizen, or if that politician simply belongs to the opposing political party, it is unfortunate that he or she may very well be coined as a dishonest politician. This is a form of mockery and slander. It is the more appropriate form of judgment to assess the unique traits and beliefs of that individual politician rather than putting them into a class of untrustworthy representatives by default. Another stereotype falls into the lap of tattooed persons. Those with tattoos have a stereotype of being tough, scary, and delinquent. One study perpetuated results that children connect a strong negative assumption about tattoos (Durkin, Houghton, 2000). Similarly, in this study it was also purported that young people who initiate interest in getting tattoos are aware of the stigma of criminality attached to those with tattoos or body art (Durkin, Houghton, 2000). Many people who choose to cover their bodies with tattoos do so with a creative edge and it does not represent any delinquency per se. However, it is obvious that many criminals and gangs have tattoos as standards, and this realization seems to bleed into the mainstream population of those with tattoos. It is unfortunate that society deems those with tattoos as estranged wrongdoers as it certainly impinges on the ability to gain employment or be generally respected and greeted appropriately by others. Feminists have long been looked upon as abrasive activists. Feminism started out this way in the 1960s in order to appease the needs of women and obtain rights. Some feminists have been extreme with their attitudes and choices of activism, but it does not necessarily represent the entire feminist population. Many feminists are not radicals but are mild heroines of women’s rights. Although some women have positive views of feminism as it related to fighting sexism and sexual oppression, only 12% of 200 college women in one particular study readily identified themselves in a feminist group (Roy, Weibust, Miller, 2007). This shows that feminism still has a negative connotation and most are scared to endorse feminism despite some of the positive aspects it entails. One last stereotype that seems highly unfortunate is that of senior citizens. Most people have the view that elderly people are slow and dumb. This comes from some facts pertaining to old age that include deterioration of the mind and body. However, it is very clear that many senior citizens have active lifestyles and are healthy and happy. Furthermore, the aspect of this stereotype that is most regrettable is that unlike the other groups that were discussed such as politicians, feminists, and tattooed persons, being elderly is not a choice; everyone comes to that stage in life. Therefore, perhaps the stereotypes forced upon senior citizens are by far the most pertinent examples of a lack of philanthropy and signify how stereotypes are harmful, outrageous slanters that lack conviction and critical thinking. The Truth Behind Stereotypes Stereotypes were developed on assumptions without any evidence. However, most stereotypes come alive with part truths that permeate the surface. There are relevant facts that pertain to stereotypes that have been witnessed within a particular group. This is possibly the most crucial aspect of stereotyping. Because of this, most people engage in stereotypes without recourse because they believe that they are expressing truth. After all, some politicians are dishonest while some tattooed people are definitely unlawful. And most people can see that feminists are usually radicals while senior citizens are most surely slow and lack wit. However, it is not viable to put all individuals who share those labels into one group because there are most certainly many people that can be in those categories who invoke a ration of the unexpected. That is why truth should not be used as a scapegoat when applying stereotypes, because truth is whole and encompassing. Stereotypes clearly only deal with some and not the entire portion, therefore there is no truth to stereotypes. How to cite Stereotype and Term Crooked Politician, Papers

The financial report within the annual report is lengthy and your doctor requests your advice as to whether he should contact the company to complain that the financial information is not understandable. Required: Provide a suitable reply to your doctor. Answers: a. With the increasing complexity of the businesses in recent times, it is necessary to have accurate cost and performance information relating to the companys products, services, processes, and customers. The cost information is very useful in designing products that generates profits and also satisfies the customers. It is also used to decide on the product mixes and in improving the processes by eliminating non value added activities. The choice of supplier can be made with the cost information and efficient distribution channels can be developed to make deliveries to the target customers with the help of this information. The accurate cost information is provided by the management accountants with the help of costing systems that they use to record the data of costs incurred. Normally a large company would use Activity based costing system which allocated the costs to various activities due to which such costs have arise and on the basis of usage of these activities by the product, process of service, the overhead costs are allocated. Management accountant plays a very important role in managing the costing system and on the basis of the data provided by the ABC system; the plant manager can improve the existing processes, products or services. He can focus on the value added activities and eliminate the non value added ones. Though the management accountants are present on the plant floor to observe the activities, however the information provided to the plant manager in the form of periodic reports by the costing system being maintained by the management accountant can be used by the plant manager to improve processes and make them more efficient. The role of the management accountant is to collect and process the information into meaningful results which can be used by the management to plan, evaluate and execute their business strategy by designing suitable business processes which will be cost effective and give products that would be customer satisfactory and profit making. b. Cash Flows Statements are a part of financial statements of a company. Cash flow statement consists of cash flow from operations, cash flow from investing activities and cash flow from financing activities. A company needs to have a positive cash flow to pay for its operational expenses and capital expenditures. However, it is not necessary that all categories in the cash flow statement should have a cash inflow, rather cash from operations should definitely have a cash inflow since it is the money generated from the companys core business and this cash can be used for day to day expenses and for any capital expenditure, the company can source cash from financing activities like issue of shares, taking a loan etc. Cash inflows from investing activities include proceeds from sale of assets of the company like plant, machinery and equipment. It also includes sale of any investments which have been made in another companys shares. The cash outflows from investing activities include purchase of land, plant and machinery, up gradation of existing equipment, buying a stake in another company by taking over its operations, technology and customers. Hence we see that most of the cash flow is in the form of outflow only where the company is spending in order to increase the value of its assets which will rather bear fruits for the company in the future. It is more likely for a cash flow from investing activities to be negative only. Also a company makes short term investments to make profits from increase in the other companys shares. All the investments made today which is resulting in negative outflow of cash will help the company in earning profits in the future and the cash flow will come indirectly from the increased revenues resulting from utilization of assets purchased and this inflow will come from cash flow from operations. Therefore, we can say that it is of no concern to have a negative cash flow from investing activities because the nature of the activity is such that it is rather good to have a negative figure because a positive cash flow means the company has sold off its assets and hence the financial position of the company gets affected in a negative way. A company with higher and useful assets is in a position to generate higher revenues with proper utilization of these assets. c. Annual reports are financial reports which are required to be issued annually by all companies listed on the stock exchange. It contains information related to the companys performance over the year. The growing complexity of the financial information has made the annual reports very complex and difficult to understand as the annual report should present all the information required by different stakeholders who have different demands. The UK Financial Reporting Council (FRC) requires all the companies to present annual reports which are fair, balanced and understandable and it also requires the external auditors to provide a confirmation of the company abides by the same. The UK corporate governance code has been revised to accommodate the above requirement and also states that the directors of the company should take the responsibility of presenting financial information which is necessary for the stakeholders to assess the companys performance and is fair, balanced and understandable. As a result of this requirement, most of the emphasis is laid on the front half of the report which is the narrative reporting as this reporting is meant for an ordinary shareholder which can be understood easily. The back part or the second half is more complex and is often used by analysts for valuation purposes. The aspects included on the first half of the annual report include the CEOs or the Chairmans statement which will gen erally give the positive aspects of the company, the review of operations , risk management techniques discussion and any special news relating to the company. Both good news and bad news should be mentioned in narrative reporting. For a financial report to be understood, it is important that the non financial information given should relate to the companys business model, strategies, and performance. Also it should be linked to the second half of the financial information. In case a company is unable to provide a fair, balanced and understandable financial report, a shareholder who is considered to be an informed reader may file a complaint with the FRC for the company not following the corporate governance code.
